New book Acid Detroit dives deep into Motor City’s history of resilience and counterculture from the 1960s to present day. Penned by Detroit-based author Joe Molloy, the book takes readers on a journey through the city’s urban unrest, sonic legacies and progressive activism.
Unlike other sixties books, Acid Detroit looks at Motor City beyond its status as techno’s birthplace. Breaking traditional boundaries, it explores Detroit’s music ethos as a multicultural hub through avant-garde hip-hop crews, garage rock, and European-influenced techno.
With vivid images and social history, Acid Detroit unearths past ruins to envision the city’s potential future. The book expands on Mark Fisher’s acid communism concept, an ideology that encouraged an egalitarian society beyond capitalism.
American rapper Bruiser Wolf said the book gave him “so much knowledge of the history of music in Detroit.” “It made me so proud to be a part of our city’s history and culture,” he said.
