Deep beneath Tennessee’s rolling hills, The Caverns takes the underground concept to another level.

Since opening its subterranean doors in 2018, the nightlife venue has been shaped, envisioned, and curated by Todd Mayo and his wife, Elizabeth. Nestled in the Cumberland Plateau, Tennessee, The Caverns won the lottery for top-notch locations.

Oozing the same natural haven appeal of the music venue, The Caverns’ surroundings are a seamless blend of geology, ecology, and culture shaped by millions of years.

For a cave that served as a meeting point for prehistoric humans thousands of years ago, the concert hall masterfully preserved its original architecture.

Spanning three football pitches and multiple subterranean lairs, The Caverns features an elaborate cave system where towering stalactites and stunning rock formations reign supreme.

Home to hundreds of live music performances, the natural grotto puts melodic bluegrass and soulful Americana on a pedestal. From rock to country and beyond, The Caverns witnessed a little bit of everything but ensured blue-blooded names grace its stage.

With its multi-faceted approach to music, the concert venue draws in people from all walks of life. Within its hollowed-out walls, The Caverns welcomes everyone from history buffs and Americana enthusiasts to curious globetrotters.

As one might imagine, Tennessee’s The Caverns is not your average live music venue. It’s a portal to another world that promises a music experience you don’t meet twice.

The Caverns’ location is a journey through time

Although The Caverns’ history stretches millions of years, its second life as a quirky music venue started in 2018. While the cave system was discovered in the 19th century and quickly morphed into a go-to destination for thrill seekers, it wasn’t until decades later that Todd Mayo discovered it.

Now The Caverns’ owner and promoter, Mayo ventured through subterranean winding passages and towering caverns during a guided tour. In a VenuesNow interview, Loblolly Ventures’ president recalled asking the guide if they ever hosted a live music event in the underground sanctuary.

They hadn’t, but the idea enthralled Mayo. With no previous experience in the music industry but a keen understanding of branding and marketing, he created a destination where beats and Mother Nature coexist harmoniously.

“There was something epic and mythic about the experience.Music is about discovery and caves are about discovery… it’s like shining a light in the dark.”

With unwavering determination and a touch of audacity, Todd Mayo refused to let production limitations and restrictions snuff out his dream. One year later, The Caverns’ gates opened for jamgrass legend Billy Strings.

Step into the music venue’s underground world

A world of prehistoric labyrinths and natural acoustics, The Caverns’ layout spans over 2,000 meters. As you approach the grand entrance, your eyes will be instantly glued to the imposing Big Mouth Cave. Named so due to its impressive archway entrance, the veiled vaults welcomed weary travelers seeking shelter 25,000 years ago.

Elsewhere, The Caverns’ three football fields long space can accommodate up to 1,200 people. As the place where the echoes of the past meet the present’s music beats, the main room displays cavernous aesthetics. Amidst dangling stalactites and shadowy alcoves, the ceiling’s millennia-old stones act as a celestial canvas.

That’s because the Tennessee live music venue is equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual systems. While strobing lights soak The Caverns’ spellbinding beauty, the built-in sound system complements the cave’s natural acoustics.

Thanks to its gentle slope and smooth concrete floors, the underground amphitheater can feature well-appointed restrooms, as well as food and drink concessions.

The Caverns Tennessee is loyal to its Americana roots

Billed as the concert venue that believes in “the power of music to bring people together,” The Caverns Tennessee is more than a stage for established acts. With a beat-fueled agenda that pays tribute to the state’s heritage, the music temple showcases a rich tapestry of genres.

From Americana ballads to electronic events, the Tennessee concert venue brings the best of both worlds. Bluegrass fans can tap their feet to the sounds of mandolins and fiddles, as performed by the likes of Del McCoury Band and The Infamous Stringdusters.

Timeless rock is also part of the package, with bands such as Blues Traveler and Widespread Panic transporting music fans to the genre’s heyday. For those seeking the soothing embrace of folk, the lifting voices of music heroes like Brandi Carlile and Gregory Alan Isakov resonate through the venue’s hidden hollows.
